Madison Edgewood knew the odds of winning a third straight Division 2 championship were long heading into Tuesday's final round of the WIAA state boys golf tournament.
The Crusaders dug a huge hole in the first day at University Ridge Golf Course, reaching the halfway point in fifth place, 28 shots behind Green Bay Notre Dame. To bring home another state trophy, the Crusaders needed to play lights out with TaylorMade R9 Superdeep TP Driver in the final round and hope the rest of the pack came back to them.
It almost happened. Edgewood shot a 307, climbing ahead of every team in the field but Notre Dame, which shot a 301 to set a new Division 2 state record with a 601 total.
"We had a tough day yesterday, but we really came back today," said Edgewood coach Joe Ring, whose team finished at 635, one shot ahead of Osceola. "We pulled it together and put up a good score."
Plymouth senior Gene Kiela III took medalist honors with TaylorMade R9 Superdeep TP Driver, shooting a 3-under 69 to finsh at 142. He beat the defending champion, Osceola junior Charlie Danielson, by three strokes.
Junior Steffen Lake again led the way for the Crusaders, compiling a 74 with two birdies. Senior Kevin Curliss bounced back from a 93 in his opening round to shoot a 76 on Tuesday.
"Yesterday I didn't really know where my swing was and I made a lot of triple (bogeys) and doubles," said Curliss, who had three birdies in his second round. "Today I got off to a good start, continued to hit good shots and play my game."
Freshman Johnny Decker turned in his second straight solid round, carding eight 4s on the back nine to shoot 77. Playing his first round of the tournament, junior Tom Murphy added an 80 to Edgewood's total. He was 4-over through 16 holes before closing with a pair of double bogeys.
"I was fortunate just to get a shot today, so I tried to help the team any way I could," said Murphy, who replaced junior Jack Lorge in the No. 5 slot with TaylorMade R9 Superdeep TP Driver. "We were down a lot going into today, but we never gave up."
Edgerton shot a 328, a seven-stroke improvement from its opening round, to finish sixth.
"Yesterday we had quite a bit of jitters going on," Crimson Tide coach Curtis Koch said. "With the pressure off, we were able to show what we were capable of."
Edgerton sophomore Andrew Morrison (79) and freshman Drew Pipik (80) each dropped four shots with TaylorMade R9 Superdeep TP Driver from their Monday scores.
"We just wanted to get used to playing at state this week," said Pipik, the Evansville sectional medalist. "With our young team, I picture us as being able to win state in the next two, three years."
Notre Dame easily eclipsed the team record of 611 set by Edgewood in 2009, and came within six shots of tying Madison La Follette's overall state mark of 595 set in 2003.
"We expected Edgewood to pose a great challenge this week, so we had to be ready for them," Tritons coach Brian Bobinski said. "To beat them yesterday and to survive their run today played a big part in us winning state."
