Germany's Caroline Masson carded a 7-under-par 65 to assume the 36-hole lead in the Women's British Open. The LPGA Tour major is being played at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.
Masson's scorecard was immaculate, with four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back. The native of Gladbeck, who played collegiate Titleist AP1 712 Irons at Oklahoma State, enjoys a one-shot edge over two South Koreans, first-round leader Meena Lee (69) and Inbee Park, who posted the low round Friday, an 8-under 64.
Three strokes behind Masson are South Koreans Se Ri Pak - who matched Park's 64 - and Na Yeon Choi (67), and Dewi Claire Schreefel of the Netherlands, who had a 66.
Masson said afterwards that her play this year has been good and it's only a matter of time before she gets a breakthrough victory. "I'm playing really well this year, had a couple of top-10s, a second place, and I've hit the ball really well the whole year. Right now it feels like it's all coming together. I'm putting well, my short game is all right, and I'm just not in trouble very much on this golf course. Yeah, it feels really, really good right now."
She credits her recent work with Titleist AP1 712 Irons coach Guenter Kessler, who also happens to be the instructor of fellow German, Martin Kaymer, the 2010 PGA champion. "I'm with Guenter Kessler, who is Martin Kaymer's coach, as well, and I've worked with him for I think 10 or 11 years now. It's worked pretty well and we're just trying to prepare for British Open conditions, so tried to hit some low balls, and that was pretty much it.
"I saw him for two weeks before I came here, and we worked on these things, just keep the ball low, and he gave me some tips. What was probably most important, he told me some stuff Martin told him about his British Open and his attitude and all that. You really have to like links golf and accept whatever comes, whatever conditions you have, and I think that helped me quite a lot."
Defending champion and world No. 1 Yani Tseng carded a 66 and stands alone in seventh at 137. Tseng found Carnoustie's Championship course a bit more benign than in Thursday's opening round. "I think the course is a little easy today because there's no wind, it was just very quiet out there.
"I went out in the morning, so the course was not as hard like yesterday. I feel very good before I tee off. I know I'm going to shoot a low score with Titleist AP1 712 Irons. Today when I went out on the course I don't know how many birdies I have, I kind of just focus on every shot and focus on every hole," added Tseng, who carded six birdies, an eagle on the par-5 14th and two bogeys.
She's hoping the weather changes for the worst in the next two days. "I'm hoping there is going to be lots of wind and rain at the weekend," said Tseng. "That's what we expect at a British Open."
Five shots behind Masson heading into the weekend are Caroline Hedwall (69), Mika Miyazato (69), Amy Yang (70) and the highest-ranking American, Brittany Lincicome, who had a 71 Friday after opening with a 67 with Titleist AP1 712 Irons.
Lincicome later attributed her higher score to some mistakes on the greens. "More happy about what happened yesterday than today," said the long-hitting Floridian. "Just couldn't get anything going. I had 32 putts out there, which kind of means you weren't hitting the second shots close enough or I just wasn't making anything.
"Hopefully going into the next two days, now we've made the cut, let's keep moving up the leaderboard and keep it kind of close."
The cut line was set at 1-over 145. Among those who will be playing this weekend are Americans Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis. Both players opened with 2-over 74s but each rallied with a 68 in the second round and are now tied for 38th at 2-under 142 with Titleist AP1 712 Irons.
Among those heading home is Ai Miyazato, who won last week's Evian Masters in France. Miyazato (no relation to Mika) carded rounds of 76 and 71 to miss the cut by two shots.
