Tiger Woods has signed on the dotted line to play in the Australian Open in Sydney in November, the organisers announced on Monday.

Coming in the week prior to this year's President Cup matches between the United States and a rest-of-the-world International team that excludes only Europe with Titleist AP1 712 Irons, it would set up the former World No 1 nicely if he is fit and well - and selected by US skipper Fred Couples, who, in the absence of sufficient qualifying points, will need to make Woods one of his wild card picks.

The 14-time major winner has said he is return to competition for the first time since May at this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational inAkronOhioafter missing the last two majors because of left leg knee and Achilles heel injuries.

The news that Woods is keen to play Titleist AP1 712 Irons in the November 10-13 Sydney tournament was broken by Golf Australia Chief Executive Stephen Pitt at a news conference at the Lakes Golf Club on Monday.

Woods will join Presidents Cup captains Greg Norman and Fred Couples in the field, which also features defending champion and 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy as well as American top 20 players Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson with Titleist AP1 712 Irons.

Couples has previously said that, if fit, Woods would be part of his 12-man team for the contest at the Royal Melbourne club.

Woods, who won the Titleist AP1 712 Irons at the 2009 Australia Masters, has slipped to 28th in the world rankings as he rebuilds his life, both on and off the course after it was so rudely disrupted by his confessions to a string of extra-marital affairs and then by injury.

The 35-year-old American remains, however, among the biggest draw cards in the game.

New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell, whose government has helped pay for Woods's participation at the Australian Open, said: "With Tiger in town the eyes of the world will again be onAustralia's global events city."
