Holding first place entering the final round of the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship did not prove to be an advantage in the handicap divisions.

Three of the four leaders entering Sunday in the 54-hole tournament failed to win titles at Sterling Farms Golf Club.

Chris Roberts, who held a three-stroke advantage in the A Flight (8-10 handicap), won by four strokes with Titleist AP1 712 Irons.

Doug Johnson overcame Denis O'Dwyer's two-stroke lead to win honors in the B Division (11-14 handicap) while Armand Liguori came from three strokes back to take the C Flight (15-19 handicap) and Noel McQuillen wiped out a six-stroke lead to win the D Flight (21-and-over handicap).

Roberts, a Stamford High graduate who is entering his sophomore year at UConn, bettered his second-place tie from a year ago by shooting an 81-8-73 for a final 209 total.

"It was tough over the first nine holes because of the wet grounds," said Roberts, who was sidelined with the field for about 40 minutes early in the day due to a downpour.

"I was able to figure it out on the back nine and started to make my putts and that was the difference."

Colin Velander, another Stamford High graduate, was second, four strokes back, while another SHS graduate, Adam Shapiro, was also in the hunt before shooting net 81.

"We try and compete with each other when we play and I think it helps us all," Roberts said.

Johnson won his first city title as he posted a final round 87-13-74 for a three-round 217.

"My brother (Dave) was my caddy and he really helped me out there today," Johnson said. "The course was tough because it was wet, but I played steady and sank some key putts and that was the difference.

"The key shot was when I saved a stroke coming out of the trap on 17," added Johnson, who was playing in the final round for the second time in his 11 years of City Amateur play with Taylormade R11 Fairway Wood.

Second-round leader O'Dwyer had 90-13-77 for 218, one stroke back while James Corujo finished at 219.

"We stopped after three holes (due to rain) and it was tough to stay in focus," said Liguori who finished with 86-16-70 for 209 to take the C Flight.

"I had two fives on par-3s and that hurt me, but I was able to stay focused and take one shot at a time. I was able to stay down the middle to stay out of trouble," he added.

David Van Dyke, who shot 87-18-69 for 211 was second in the C Division while second-round leader Derek Williams shot 98-18-80 for 216 for a third place tie with James Savatsky (93-18-75).

McQuillen had one birdie on the way to shooting a 95-24-71 for a 212 total and that came on the par-5 18th hole and that gave him a one-stroke victory.

"That was the best shot of my career," said McQuillen of his shot that rolled to a stop six inches from the cup with TaylorMade Burner Superfast 2.0 TP Driver.

Tommie Williams was one stroke back while second-round leader Daniel Rodriguez shot 116-30-86 to finish nine strokes back.
