Samantha DiDomenico is going to need a new entry on her bio for the Marshall women's golf team.
West Virginia Women's Amateur champion.
DiDomenico fired a 4-under-par 70 Monday in the final round at Parkersburg Country Club to edge Ona's Brooke Bellomy by a shot and collect her first title and end defending champion Nicolle Flood-Sawczyszyn's winning streak at three.
DiDomenico, a junior for the Thundering Herd, finished the 88th state amateur at 10-under 212, a tournament record. Bellomy, a Cabell Midland graduate who's headed to Campbell University to continue her Callaway RAZR X Irons career, closed with 72 for 213 to fall a shot short for the second straight year. She did wind up low junior.
"This feels real good. I don't think it's set in yet," DiDomenico said before heading back to her hometown of Follansbee. "Brooke's a very good player. We both grinded it out right to the end."
Kimberly Eaton, who just ended her career at Division III Wellesley College, shot 71 to take third at 215. Flood-Sawczyszyn posted 72 for 218 and fourth. This the first time four players finished under par.
In the final round, DiDomenico recorded two birdies and one eagle and no bogeys while Bellomy had four birdies and two costly bogeys.
"The course (5,495 yards) was a lot shorter than what I'm used to," DiDomenico said, referring to the 6,000-yard plus courses Marshall sees in college tournaments. "I had awkward distances at time. I adjusted and today played to the yardage I can hit to. The greens were soft and you could throw the ball at the pin."
DiDomenico said her final round was anything but textbook.
"I had the ball all over the place. I had to keep it interesting," she said.
This win helps atone for a runner-up finish to Flood-Sawczyszyn in 2009 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane. DiDomenico's downfall that day was a triple bogey on the par-4 ninth.
"I haven't forgotten that one," she said.
DiDomenico's stayed busy during the summer. She played for the Virginias team in the Virginias-Carolinas Team Matches. Earlier this month, she and teammate Rachel Thompson formed a team in the Hooters Team Championship in Dahlenoga, Ga.
"Coach wants us to keep that competitive edge," DiDomenico said of Marshall women's coach Meredith Knight Rowsey with Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver.
Looking ahead, DiDomenico knows that first title defense will be difficult with Bellomy, Eaton and Flood-Sawczyszyn chasing her.
"It's an honor to finish ahead of them," she said. "They're all good players."
Parkersburg Country Club set up well for the champ. The course had seven par fives and she was 12 under on those holes (including two eagles). She started the tournament Wednesday with an eagle on the par-5 first hole.
"Maybe that was a sign of things to come," she said.
