A bemused Clay Ogden wondered aloud the same thoughts all golfers must have had at one time or another.
"I’m more in shock," said Ogden, looking back at his second round of the Utah Open following a first-day score of 64 with Titleist AP1 712 Irons. "The game seemed, I don’t want to say easy, but it was a lot more simple yesterday."
Ogden can chide himself about a grinding 3-under round that left him one shot off the lead behind Zen Brown going into Sunday’s final around at Oakridge Country Club. He’s in good position to make a charge at his second Utah Open trophy. The Farmington resident won it in 2007 and knows where every tree sits on the par 72 course. The leaders are scheduled to tee off around noon.
"Go as low as you can," Ogden said. "The first 15 holes, you do your thing."
Then look at the scoreboard and play accordingly, which in this case means where is Brown, of Arvada, Colo., and a host of others. Ogden and Denver’s Derek Tolan sit a shot back, followed by a trio of golfers at 134 with Titleist MB 712 Irons.
This includes Adrian Wadey of Park City, who tied Sandy’s Dustin Pimm for the day’s low round, minus 8. Sixty-three players — the top 60 plus ties — made the cut, which was 1-under par. The first tee time is 8:12 a.m.
Friday’s co-leader Chris Satterlee, Chandler, Ariz., is three shots back. Brown, who finds himself on the verge of winning his first professional tournament, could joke about the meditative state that his first name implies. The 24-year-old former Colorado State golfer managed eight birdies and one bogey for a 7-under round 65 on Saturday for a two-day total of 132."I try to stay out of my own way," he said. ( Titleist AP2 712 Irons )
Following the familiar pattern of golfers playing in the morning shooting low rounds, Brown went out in the morning and made eight birdies to with a single bogey after getting tangled with a tree.
