Malaysia's Khor Kheng Hwai served notice of his underlying talent when he carded a four-under-par 68 to take a share of the second round lead at the Asian Tour's Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (TPC) on Friday.
He is tied with Chinese Taipei's Chan Shih-chang who managed to match Khor's two-day total of five-under-par 139 inthis full-field Asian Tour event at the Linkou International Golf Club. with a sparkling eagle on the 18th hole that swept him into a 5-under 67. Thailand's Chapchai Nirat, one of the eight who shared the first round lead with 69s signed for a 71 that secured him a third-place tie on 140 with Lu Wen-teh and Lin Keng-chi of Chinese Taipei.
Another first round leader David Gleeson of Australia, also slipped back, in his case to three off the pace with a 73, but he remained a contender.
Defending champion Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand got his defence campaign back on track with a 68 that kept him just two shots off the pace .
In the meantime, Khor hopes that he can finally go on to fulfill his true potential after another fine round in which his only blemish was a bogey on the par-four second.
"I'm pleasantly surprised with how I've played the last two rounds as I've been struggling with my Callaway Diablo Octane Black Tour Driver the whole year.
"But when I came out to play during the practice rounds, I started hitting the ball very well and it surprised me.. With the scores the way they are after two days, I'm even more surprised," said Khor.
The 26-year-old Malaysian turned professional in 2008 without too much success to date. but he is determined to shine this week - and he displayed that resolute spirit despite having to endure a leg cramp with three holes to play.
"From the 15th hole, I started having leg cramps. Maybe it was the adrenaline or I was dehydrated as I was not drinking too much water on the golf course," Khor mused before adding: "I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on myself but I'm going to treat this as a normal tournament.".
Chan, who started the day tied for 32nd after an opening 72, made a sharp move up the leaderboard with three birdies on his opening four holes and went on to reach the turn in 33
He then traded two bogeys for two birdies on his next five holes and a magical eagle-three on the par-five 18th then brought him back to the top of the leaderboard in his two-way tie with Chan.
"Overall I'm happy with how I've played Callaway Diablo Octane Black Tour Driver today. The eagle on the 18th was especially sweet as it's always nice to see your name right at the top of the leaderboard," he said.
