Titleist AP2 710 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity forged irons that provide improved feel, classic blade looks, and playability with shot control for the serious and skilled golfer.
Titleist is synonymous with the best golfers in the world and also synonymous with making some of the best clubs you can buy. I'm always excited to get my hands on a new Titleist product to take on the course, because everything about the clubs is usually superb. This spring, one of the golfers at my home course walked up to the first tee with a shiny new set of Titleist AP2 Forged Irons in his bag. Even without looking at the profile and shape of them too closely, I was instantly attracted to them for a number of reasons. They're Titleist's, they're forged, and they're insanely beautiful, they are a winning combination. I knew that I just had to get my hands on a set of these beauties to see how they stack up to the rest of the forged irons out there.
The existence of these irons (and their two siblings) has been official for a few days now, but the details were made known in our Bag Drop "Titleist Introduces New Irons for 2008" of a few weeks ago. Titleist is replacing every iron in their set with the new AP1, AP2, ZB, and ZM irons. Gone are the well-liked 695 (in CB and MB variations). Gone is the 735.CM. Gone are the 755s and the 775s. Five models are being replaced by four, three of which are forged, and one of which aims to bring incredible feel and performance to the "aspiring golfer" crowd.
Advanced Performance with improved Feel: High quality, high technology design and construction feature a forged steel body, high density tungsten nickel sole and Tuned Feel System to enhance performance and feel. The integrated aluminum and soft elastomer Tuned Feel System in the back cavity improves sound and feel at impact. The soft forged carbon steel body and high-density tungsten nickel sole box reduces low frequency vibration, for soft, solid feel.
Features:
Playability with Shot Control: Dual cavity design pushes weight to the perimeter resulting in playability without loss of shot shaping control.
Improved Short Irons: Reduced bounce sole delivers improved ground contact.
High Performance Sole: High performance sole with width, camber and bounce specs designed to deliver playability from a variety of lies and turf conditions without excessive bounce or dig.
Confidence Inspiring Appearance: Contemporary, confidence inspiring set-up appearance features a traditional blade profile with soft blends and classic proportions.
Dual Hosel Lengths: Shorter hosel in long irons helps bias weight low for improved launch. Longer hosel in mid and short irons helps manage flight.
When I finally got some AP2 Irons to hit, the first looks at them were a little surprising. Looking at them from address and in the bag you can tell that they're a little thicker in the topline and sole than most forged irons. They honestly look like Callaway made them, but the lines are still eye-pleasing and confidence building. You don't really get that peculiar if-you-hit-this-off-center-people-will-die feeling. Like almost any Titleist club, the swingweight feels almost perfectly dialed and you just feel good making a swing with them in your hands.
These irons are lovely, and with a repeatable swing the feedback is quite superb. You know exactly how you've hit each shot, and there is certainly no disguising a poorly-struck effort. Not that there are too many of those, thanks to the cleverly tweaked sole. The leading and trailing edges have been rolled while the midsole have been flattened. It sounds a little complicated but it essentially means that the way the club make contact with the turf (known as 'interaction' in the trade) has been analyzed so that any drag on the ground is minimized. If you move the ball off the left or right toe you can vary the height, three shots without doing anything different. Take one club at a time, move the ball around and get some feedback. Learn what each club and each ball position does.
The Titleist AP2 irons are big winners in my book. You get all the benefit of a forged iron without getting punished big time if you have an off day.
