Sterling And Reno Advance For Griffins

October 10th, 2011

Kelly Sterling was torn between beaming and frowning.

She had just advanced to the IHSA Class AA golf championship as a freshman for Lincoln-Way East, which even her sister, Kathy, didn’t do.

But Lincoln-Way East wasn’t going as a team. The Griffins’ total of 66-over-par 350 had them fourth, three strokes behind third-place Lyons with Mizuno MX 700 Fairway Wood, the final sectional qualifier at Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen.

“It means a lot to make it because I’m a freshman,” said Sterling, who contributed one birdie to her total of 7-over 78 Monday. “I made a few mental mistakes today. I hit the wrong club a few times.”

Sterling will have some company. Teammate Katie Reno’s 83 also made the grade. Reno was part of a four-way tie for seventh that just avoided a playoff.

Emily Lejman (Lemont, 78), Krystal Garritson (Lockport, 82) and Alexis Biedrzycki (Lincoln-Way West, 76) also qualified individually.

“Going downstate was my goal all season,” said Lejman, who chipped in for birdie on the par-3 fourth. “I played a practice round here Sunday and shot 73, and I was so much more confident today because of that.” ( TaylorMade Tour Preferred Forged MB Irons )

Garritson’s putter was working, and one of the few on a day with rounds running more than six hours, coupled with pernicious pin placements.

“I made a long putt for par on No. 1, and that got me going,” Garritson said. “It wasn’t my best round, but my putting was outstanding.”

The numbers were cruelest for Providence. The Celtics had four players advance from regional play with TaylorMade Burner Superfast 2.0 TP Driver, and the quartet’s total of 347 would have tied Lyons for the third team place, had they been allowed to play for a team spot. Kelly Brightmore’s 13-over 84 led the Celtics, but that was a stroke more than needed to advance as an individual, so Providence will not be represented at Hickory Point.

Slattery Widens The Gap

October 10th, 2011

England’s Lee Slattery doubled his overnight lead on Saturday and will head into Sunday’s final round of the Bankia Madrid Open two shots clear of Australian Brett Rumford and Argentine Lorenzo Gagli.

This after he shot a bogey-free 69 by Titleist 910 D3 Driver in Saturday’s second round at the El Encin Golf Hotel to take his 54-hole total to a 14-under 202.

Rumford posted a 68 and Gagli a 69 to be two shots off the pace at 12-under with Italy’s Francesco Molinari, Sweden’s Oscar Floren and a second Argentine, Cesar Monasterio, in a three way tie at 11-under.

Casey Hits Back As Tiger Hangs In

October 9th, 2011

Paul Casey had stormed into the lead with a stunning 7-under 64 at the Frys.com Open when bad light ended the second round with 48 players still out on the course.

Tiger Woods, who after an opening with a hugely disappointing 2-over 73, was not one of them. The 14-time major winner, who has fallen from No 1 to No51 inthe World Rankings, was back in the clubhouse, smiling, after a fight-back 68 had hosted him to just seven shots off the pace and put him in position to safely make the cut.

England’s World No 20, Casey, in the meantime had used the sparkling sunny weather that followed the fog at the CordeValle Golf resort in Northern California to craft eight birdies against just one bogey, take his halfway total to an 8-under 134 and lift him one shot clear of unheralded American Bud Cauley, who shot a six-birdie 66 to be at 7-under and three-time major winner Ernie Els who was at 5-under for the day with two holes to play as he honed his TaylorMade Tour Preferred Forged MB Irons ahead of the Presidents Cup.

Slattery Leads As Donald Stutters

October 9th, 2011

Lee Slattery leads by one after round two of the Bankia Madrid Masters, while Luke Donald had a late slip-up to fall further behind.

The World No 1 looked on course for a second consecutive 68 or better after reaching the 16th hole four under par for his round thanks to five birdies following an early bogey at the second, but two late errors cost him dearly with Titleist 910 D3 Driver.

Donald dropped a shot at 16 after missing the green with his tee shot and fluffing his chip and then, even more uncharacteristically, he three-putted the 18th green for his third bogey of the round, resulting in a second round 70 that left him on six under par for the tournament, a full five strokes off Slattery’s lead.
